How much water do you need to drink to lose weight?

A very general guideline is about 2 litres per day i.e. 8 medium size glasses of water.  You can work it out more accurately by multiplying your weight in pounds by 0.55 then multiplying the answer by .025.

But why is this necessary? Why does drinking more water help to lose weight?

Water is the key to losing weight and helping to keep the weight off. Sometimes when you feel hungry your body is actually thirsty so drinking water will help to stop cravings.

Studies show that a decrease in drinking water can cause fat deposits to increase and the opposite is also true, so it really helps if you can imagine every time you go to the bathroom you are flushing out fat!

Also, in the beginning when you increase your water intake you will be going to the bathroom more regularly. This will settle down in time as the body gets used to the increased quantity. But also try to sip your water regularly throughout the day rather than drinking large quantities in one go. The water will absorb much better around the body and won’t run straight to your bladder!

Most people who retain water are actually not drinking enough and so the body starts to conserve water for survival causing fluid retention in fingers, ankles and feet.

Water also helps to flush out toxins and keeps the digestion working properly avoiding constipation.

Water also helps to promote good muscle tone and hydrates your skin.

And remember the metabolism takes place in a moist environment which helps with your weight loss!

So do your body a favour and drink your water!

Tips for drinking water:

  • Have a supply beside your bed and drink a full glass or two immediately when you wake up
  • When your busy getting organised in the morning, boil the kettle and drink a couple of warm cups of water – add a slice of lemon – that’s really cleansing
  • Make up a two litre jug of water and add your favourite fruit – or cucumber, lime, oranges etc. Then just make sure the jug is finished at the end of the day!
